The Cogwheel for your first Research Table is in the Support wagon at the starting settlement. Select an available settler, right-click the wagon with the default mouse controls, and let the interaction finish. The building is named Research Station in current game data; its reported base cost is 10 Logs and 1 Cogwheel. The same wagon contains 20 Logs, so its support kit covers the station's base materials.

Evidence boundary: the wagon interaction is confirmed by the original player who asked the Steam question and by several replies. The item contents and base construction cost come from a current game-data reference, not from a test performed by this site. Check the live blueprint if your Management Difficulty or a later patch displays a different cost.

Get the Cogwheel from the starting wagon

Use this sequence before repeating dungeon floors for a Cogwheel:

  1. Return to the settlement and find the Support wagon placed near the starting area.
  2. Select one settler who is present, available, and able to reach the wagon.
  3. With the default mouse controls, right-click the wagon and choose or queue its available interaction.
  4. Let the settler complete the task, then check the dropped supplies, the settler's carried items, and nearby storage for the Cogwheel.
  5. Clear or harvest the emptied wagon only after confirming that the support supplies have been released.

The Steam discussion matters because it records the exact point that blocked the player: right-clicking the wagon did nothing until a character was selected first. Another player notes that the global task controls can also reveal harvestable or removable objects, but key bindings can be changed. Selecting a settler and using the wagon's current interaction prompt is the safer instruction.

Current GamesRef data lists the standard Support wagon as always providing 1 Cogwheel, 20 Logs, 7 Tech Books, plus food, grass, and Ointment. For this task, the important result is the Cogwheel and at least 10 accessible Logs. Do not spend the Cogwheel on another advanced construction before placing the Research Station.

Build the Research Station

Players often call it the Research Table or Research Workbench, while the current data entry calls the buildable object Research Station. Search the construction menu for that in-game name if “Research Table” returns nothing.

The current base-data reference reports this construction cost:

MaterialBase amountWhere the first supply comes from
Log10The starting Support wagon lists 20 Logs
Cogwheel1The starting Support wagon lists one guaranteed Cogwheel

Choose a reachable tile, place the blueprint, and keep a builder available until the work completes. The data source confirms the materials but does not establish one universal room layout for every current save. Follow the live placement indicator. If you are trying to make the station count as a Research Lab, finish the room enclosure and check the room requirements separately.

The same building reference reports that dismantling the Research Station returns its 10 Logs and Cogwheel. Treat that as a recovery option for a badly placed station, but verify the current deconstruction preview before confirming; it is safer than assuming every difficulty or later build refunds the same materials.

If the wagon does not respond

Work through the interaction problem in this order:

  1. Select one settler first. This resolved the original Steam report.
  2. Make sure the settler is in the settlement. A member assigned to a dungeon party cannot perform a settlement task from underground.
  3. Check access. Remove a blocked route and confirm the settler can stand beside the wagon.
  4. Inspect the queued task. If the interaction appears but nobody acts, check current work priorities and whether the selected member is already committed to another urgent job.
  5. Use the current binding. Custom controls can make an old letter-key tip misleading; use the interaction or task shown by your Game Guide and input settings.

Do not restart a campaign only because the Cogwheel is not immediately visible. First check the ground around the wagon, the selected member, nearby storage, and active construction reservations. If a Research Station already exists, the Cogwheel may be inside that building rather than missing.

If the Research Station will not build

A placed blueprint and an available material are different things. Confirm that the game can actually reserve all 10 Logs and the Cogwheel, that a worker can reach both the materials and the blueprint, and that the Cogwheel has not already been reserved by another project.

If the station is absent from the menu, search for Research Station, then follow the current tutorial or main-quest prompt until its construction step is available. Public sources reviewed for this page do not establish a universal quest number for every scenario, so the current objective panel is more reliable than a copied launch-day sequence.

If the station is built but research is not moving

Construction only creates the workplace. To start research, open the Research interface, choose a node whose prerequisites are complete, provide any shown Tech Books, and keep a settler available to perform the research job. Then watch the progress value long enough to distinguish a slow task from a stalled one.

Check these blockers:

  • no research node has been selected;
  • an earlier prerequisite is unfinished;
  • the node requires Tech Books that are unavailable or inaccessible;
  • no settler can reach or work at the station;
  • work priorities keep sending the intended researcher elsewhere;
  • the current Management Difficulty makes the workload slower than an older video suggests.

Official v0.4.23 notes reduce the Research Work Amount multiplier on Very Hard to 1.15× and on Devastation to 1.30×. That affects time, not the wagon interaction or the Research Station's reported base material list. Use the live progress display before treating slow research as a bug.

Choose the first research by the next blocked action

Once the station works, move from this setup guide to the full Research Tree. Its current reference starts with Wood Processing and Basic Storage, then follows food, camping, equipment, housing, alchemy, or storage according to the problem stopping the next expedition.

Do not choose a branch only because it is furthest along the tree. Name the item, room, workstation, or expedition supply you need, trace its prerequisites, and reserve Tech Books for that result. Research unlocks an option; it does not automatically build the station or supply the recipe materials.
